How dishonest and transparent for Brooke Adams to exploit the Trolley Square shooting tragedy to advance The Tribune's anti-gun agenda.

Surely in her research for "After Trolley, after Newtown, after Aurora — can we ever feel safe?" (Tribune, Dec. 22), she discovered that the Trolley Square gunman was stopped after trading shots with off-duty Ogden police officer Kenneth Hammond, and that Salt Lake police thanked Hammond as a hero.

Adams' failure to acknowledge the immediate impact that Hammond had on the outcome is a disservice to the debate before us, to Hammond and to the survivors.

The Tribune could have interviewed many who can attest that they are alive only because an opposing gun was present during those critical moments before law enforcement arrived — moments when, if lives are to be saved, nothing else will do.
