A list of Utah's 49 homicides in 2012

A list of Utah's homicides in 2012. The list also includes killings that were deemed to be in self-defense or a justified use of officer force.

Jared Francom, 30 • Jan. 4. The Weber Morgan Narcotics Strike Force agent was killed in Ogden during a shootout while serving a search warrant.

Kerry Brown, 42 • Jan. 24. The dollmaker was killed after a fatal punch during a fight in South Salt Lake. Prosecutors declined to file charges, saying Brown's assailant was acting in self defense.

Carlos Mose, 35 • Jan. 28. A Monument Valley tour guide, Mose was allegedly shot to death by a 28-year-old woman in Halchita.

Trenton Hall, 35 • Jan. 28. The American Fork man died after he was allegedly struck once in the head by another man outside of a bar.

Victor Flores, 26 • Feb. 9. Missing since May 2011, the California man's body was found buried in a backyard in Roy. The home's owner was charged with obstruction of justice, but no arrests have been made in Flores' murder.

Michael Dunn, 52 • Feb. 21. The Bountiful man was allegedly stabbed in his apartment by his girlfriend.

Armando Martinez, Jr., 31 • March 1. A Springville homeowner shot and killed Martinez after Martinez broke into his home, threatened him and demanded money. The homeowner was not charged after the shooting was ruled self defense.

Anne Kasprzak, 15 • March 11. The body of the West Jordan teen was found in the Jordan River a day after she was reported missing. Two men were arrested in connection with her death, but no formal charges have been filed.

Stephen Guadalupe Chavez, 26 • March 14. A man armed with an assault rifle allegedly shot and killed Chavez, an employee of a smoke shop owned by his father, after a confrontation earlier that day outside the store.

Sean Morrison, 15 • March 18. The mentally ill Magna teen was shot by Unified Police officers after he raided his parents' gun collection and fired shots in the officers' direction. The police shooting was found to be justified.

Virginia Ray Hansen, 18 • March 21. The 18-year-old was allegedly shot in West Jordan by her mother, who unsuccessfully tried to kill herself in what the mother later said was a botched suicide pact.

Adria Parker, 25 •March 22. The Washington County mother and her 5-year-old daughter were shot and killed by her boyfriend, who then killed himself.

Eliza Parker, 5 • March 22. The 5-year-old was the second victim in a double murder-suicide in Washington County.

Shantelle Reid, 25 • April 9. The Murray woman was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, who was later injured in a shootout with police.

Ryan Patrick, 32 • May 4. Patrick was stabbed to death during a fight in Price. Prosecutors declined to charge the man who stabbed him on the grounds of self defense.

Alvert John Mike, 21 • May 19. A fight at a Murray house party escalated into a shooting in which Mike was killed by a rival gang member.

Cameron Charlton, 17 • May 28. During a camping trip in Juab County, Charlton was accidentally shot and killed by his older brother.

Sierra Newbold, 6 • June 26. The West Jordan girl was found dead in a canal near her house. Police later arrested a neighbor who allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered the kindergartener.

Brendon Saunders, 41 • June 30. A man visiting Saunders' ex-wife in her apartment shot and killed Saunders after he kicked down the door and rushed toward the man. Prosecutors determined the shooting was in self defense and did not charge the man.

William Wright, 36 • July 3. Wright was allegedly stabbed to death in Payson by a Spanish Fork man who was angry that Wright would not let the suspect's underage cousin into a house party.

Antonio Vasquez, 33 • July 28. Vasquez was shot and killed during an argument in Salt Lake City. The alleged shooter fired his gun across a city block, wounding another man and grazing an 8-year-old boy.

Kaleb Yazzie, 22 • July 31. During a house party on Capitol Hill, Yazzie was allegedly stabbed and beaten by two brothers after an argument.

Paul Giovale, 41 • Aug. 6. Police say that Giovale was shot after he pulled a gun during an argument in a Sandy garage. One man was arrested following the shootout but no charges have been filed.

Simon Vasquez, 40 • Aug. 14. After being shot in the neck and paralyzed during the same shootout in Sandy that killed Paul Giovale, Vasquez died of his injuries a week later.

Jack Morris, 50 • Aug. 18. The Carbon County man's brother pleaded guilty to shooting Morris and living with his decomposing body for almost three weeks. Kurt Morris was sentenced to 15 years to life.

Michael Workman, 25 • Aug. 23. During a fight with three other men, the Sandy resident was stabbed by one of the alleged attackers, who has been charged with murder.

Justen LeFave, 32 • Aug. 26. LeFave was shot after answering the front door to his apartment in Midvale. Two men and two women who allegedly planned on robbing LeFave have been charged with murder.

Kenyatta Winston, 16 • Aug. 29. The Salt Lake City teen's body was discovered in a vacant Sugar House lot after Winston was shot in a Salt Lake motel room. Four people were later arrested in connection to the death, leading to murder charges for two men.

James Michael George, 52 • Sept. 13. During an argument, George was allegedly shot multiple times by his teenage stepson in their West Valley City home.

Tracy Little, 47 • Sept. 19. The Cedar City woman was allegedly beaten severely by her boyfriend while under the influence of drugs. Little succumbed to her injuries 10 days later.

Johnny Rosales, 47 • Sept. 21. The Kaysville man was shot multiple times by two men in an apartment complex after Rosales shot and critically wounded a maintenance worker at the complex. Police later found Rosales dead inside his apartment after the altercation.

Alida Dalton, 28 • Sept. 22. The Taylorsville woman was the victim of a murder-suicide in which her boyfriend shot Dalton then killed himself in a nearby schoolyard.

Anthony Mayhew, 39 • Sept. 27. Mayhew was gunned down by police after threatening to detonate a bomb at a downtown Salt Lake City light rail station. A backpack he was carrying was later found to contain explosives. The shooting was deemed justified.

Joyce Dexter, 84 • Oct. 3. The Salt Lake City woman was allegedly stabbed multiple times by her mentally ill grandson in her Avenues residence.

Corey Kanosh, 35 • Oct. 15. The Fillmore man was shot and killed by a Millard County sheriff's deputy during a struggle at the end of a high-speed car chase that began with a reported car theft. The shooting was subsequently ruled justified.

Alfred Montoya, 62 • Oct. 18. Montoya died after a brief physical altercation at a Salt Lake City gas station in which a man elbowed Montoya in the head. Police have not made any arrests, and the case remains under investigation.

Marnie Stark, 38 • Oct. 20. Stark, of Ogden, died after allegedly being beaten by her live-in boyfriend, Jeffrey Dean White, who was charged in her murder. In November, he committed suicide while in the Weber County Jail.

Jennifer Brackenbury, 44 • Oct. 26. The Orem woman was allegedly stabbed by her boyfriend, who drove to Washington state and turned himself in a few days later.

Troy Burkinshaw, 52 • Oct. 26. Burkinshaw was shot and killed by a Box Elder County Sheriff's deputy as Burkinshaw drove toward the deputy. A county attorney ruled the shooting was justified.

Valentin Sigala, Jr., 20 • Oct. 28. Phillip James Lucero allegedly shot Sigala to death during an argument at a Salt Lake City party.

Madelin Benson, 76 • Oct. 31. David Keith Benson beat his wife to death with a hammer at their home in Washington, Utah, police say. David Benson is suspected of suffering from mental illness.

Danielle Willard, 21 • Nov. 2. Two West Valley City detectives investigating a drug case shot Willard in front of an apartment complex. The case remains under investigation.

Ann Jensen, 43 • Nov. 4. South Salt Lake police found Ann Marie Jensen dead at her apartment while responding to a 911 call concerning gunshots. No one has been charged with her murder.

John Palm, 63 • Nov. 5. Police say Doneral Dalton stabbed Palm, his stepfather, to death at Palm's home in Taylorsville.

Jessica Lucero, 39 • Nov. 5. Gary Lee Lucero shot his wife and then himself in a murder-suicide at their home in Syracuse.

Agoth Balbeck, 36 • Nov. 8. Police said Balbeck developed a medical condition as a result of a 2006 aggravated assault in Salt Lake City. When he died in November from that condition, his death was classified as a homicide. No arrests have been made, but police expect to screen the case with the district attorney's office.

Dustin D. Hoffman, 27 • Nov. 10. Prosecutors allege Isaac Anthony Gallegos stabbed Hoffman in the chest during a fight outside a South Salt Lake strip club.

Jeffrey Jensen, 28 • Nov. 23. Payson police say Jensen died from a shotgun blast during a failed robbery attempt. A man and woman have been arrested.

Zita Gruodis, 58 • Nov. 26. Airida Maria Gruodis, who has a history of mental illness, is suspected of stabbing her mother at her Cottonwood Heights home.

Ralph Salazar, 59 • Dec. 14 and •Dec. 14. The bodies of Salazar and a woman were found in a bedroom as firefighters extinguished a house fire in Sandy. Police say they were shot. No arrests have been made.

Alice Griego, 55 • Dec. 14. She was the woman found inside Salazar's burned home. Her relationship to Salazar has not been determined, according to police.

Jose Rodriguez-Castro, 32 • Dec. 20. Rodriguez-Castro was cutting his girlfriend with a knife outside a Department of Workforce Services office in Taylorsville when a Unified Police Department officer shot him.

James Mitchell, 31 • Dec. 23. Jeromie Bunch shot Mitchell outside a home in Helper then killed himself. Mitchell was dating Bunch's estranged wife. —
