State colleges: Nick Thompson's triple-double leads Utah Valley over Austin Peay

Chattanooga, Tenn. • Nick Thompson had the first triple-double in Utah Valley history and Ben Aird scored a career-high 26 points as the Wolverines defeated Austin Peay 84-77 Friday in the first round of the Dr Pepper Classic.

Thompson had 13 points, 10 rebounds and a school-record 12 assists for Utah Valley (7-8). Holton Hunsaker scored 18 of his 21 points in the second half. The Wolverines broke away from a 67-all tie in the final 5 minutes.

Utah Valley shot a season-best 61 percent from the field in handing the Governors their fifth consecutive defeat.

Travis Betran led Austin Peay (4-9) with 27 points. Anthony Campbell added 22 points for the Governors, who shot 48 percent in each half. Alfonzo Hubbard had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Wolverines.

Westminster 73, Saint Xavier 70 • In Santa Barbara, Calif., the No. 5-ranked Griffins won their eight straight game to improve to 12-1.

SLCC 66, Howard 63 • In Mesa, Ariz., JuWan Buchanan scored 15 points and Gary Payton II tallied 12 points and nine rebounds as Salt Lake Community College defeated No. 2-ranked Howard in the opening round of the Fiesta Junior College Shootout.

Skyler Halford scored 12 points for the Bruins (11-2, 1-0 Scenic West Athletic Conference), who trailed by seven at halftime.

Women's basketball

SLCC 65, Chandler-Gilbert Community College 48 • In Phoenix, Natalie Parsons scored a team-high 16 points to lead the 20th-ranked Bruins (9-4, 0-1 SWAC) to victory in the Bill Culver Classic.

Westminster 60, San Diego Christian 40 • In Santa Barbara, Calif., Nicole Yazzie scored a game-high 17 points and Tia Pappas added 15 as the No. 5-ranked Griffins improved to 11-2 with a win in the GSAC Challenge.
