hockey • The NHL and the players' association are ready to get back to the bargaining table. There were no formal negotiations Sunday, but the union said talks would resume Monday in an effort to end the lockout and save the season.

Those would be the first negotiations since the sides met with a federal mediator Dec. 13. All games through Jan. 14 have been canceled, claiming more than 50 percent of the original schedule. The NHL wants to reach a deal by Jan. 11 and open the season Jan. 19, with a 48-game schedule.

UVU's Wilson places eighth in tourney

Wrestling • Utah Valley's Josh Wilson placed eighth in the 149-pound class at the 50th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Sunday in Evanston, Ill. After going 4-1 on Saturday, Wilson went 1-2 on Sunday. He upset No. 7 seed David Habat of Edinboro (7-3) before losing to Eric Grajales of Michigan (8-4) and Shane Welsh of Lehigh (3-0). Wilson placed in the top eight at the prestigious tournament for the second straight year.

Chelsea keeps pressure on leaders

soccer • Frank Lampard scored twice in a 2-1 victory at Everton on Sunday, boosting Chelsea's hopes of catching Manchester United and Manchester City in the Premier League title race. Chelsea, playing on the road, fell behind after just 63 seconds before Lampard struck in the 42nd and 72nd minutes. Lampard's contract is up this summer and he is free to talk to other clubs starting Tuesday. A fourth straight win kept Chelsea four points behind second-place Manchester City with a game in hand going into the new year. United is in first place by seven points
