Utah man who fired on deputies to stay in prison until 2041

The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole has decided that a Price man who shot and injured a Carbon County sheriff's deputy will serve a full 30-year term in prison.

Gary Hinkins Jr. pleaded guilty to five second-degree felony counts of attempted murder in March as part of a plea agreement. In June, a 7th District judge sentenced him to a prison sentence of one to 15 years on each of the five counts but also said the term should not exceed 30 years.

The board said Hinkins, 42, will not be paroled and will remain in prison until 2041, when his term expires.

In February 2011, deputies and probation officers went to Hinkins' home after his wife was admitted to Castleview Hospital and reported that he had beaten her.

Hinkins locked himself in an RV near his home and, when police ordered him to come out, fired a shotgun at least seven times through the walls and windshield of the vehicle.

Some of the buckshot struck deputy Michael Hreinson in the leg and torso, injuring him. Hinkins was captured after he ran from the RV.

He was already on probation for a 2010 case involving attempted aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon.
