As his first act as mayor, Ben McAdams wants to celebrate Salt Lake County.

The 37-year-old Democrat will be sworn in as Salt Lake County's new mayor 9 a.m. Monday at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. 300 South.

A gala is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the Utah Museum of Natural History, 301 Wakara Way.

Seating is limited and tickets are required for both events. Free tickets may be obtained by calling the Mayor's Office at 385-468-7000.

In keeping with the "Celebrate Salt Lake County" theme of the inauguration, free events underwritten by the county's ZAP (Zoo, Arts & Parks) tax will be held throughout the county. A list of events is available at www.slco.org/celebrateslco.html.

Another of McAdams' inauguration themes is volunteerism. Accordingly, county residents are encouraged to participate in a food drive beginning on inauguration day and continuing through Jan. 11 at the Salt Lake County Government Center, 2001 S. State. Proceeds will go to the Utah Food Bank.

McAdams will be sworn in by 3rd District Judge Andrew Valdez, whose recent book, No One Makes It Alone, was hailed by the new mayor as a great example of how volunteerism enriches the community.
