Man charged in West Valley City standoff

Prosecutors have charged a West Valley City man after police say he fired off shots and threatened to kill them during a standoff.

Wayne Connell Parry, 43, was charged Thursday with eight counts of felony discharge of a firearm, four counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, which are also felonies, in 3rd District Court. He was also charged with four counts of violation of a protective order, which are misdemeanors.

A woman who lived with Parry obtained a protective order against him, and on Dec. 20 called for police to make sure he wasn't at their home before she went in. The officer tried the door, but Parry slammed it shut and told the officer to stay out, or he would kill him, according to the charges.

More police arrived at the home near 3100 S. Cantwell Street. While looking through slats in the fence, one of the officers reported hearing gunshots in the backyard.

Parry refused to come out for several hours, during which time he repeatedly threatened to kill the officers and fired rounds from an assault rifle, the charges state. He eventually gave up and a search of the home revealed a bullet hole in the fence and in a tree of the backyard where two officers had been standing, as well as bullet holes in the walls of the house.
