Early morning blaze destroys Genola home

An early Friday fire destroyed an unoccupied home just south of Utah Lake.

Genola Fire Chief Greg Smith said the cause of the blaze was under investigation, but it initially appeared to have been accidental, possibly electrical in origin.

A passing police officer reported the fire about 3 a.m., and Smith said when firefighters arrived the single-story home's attic was fully involved and the roof was collapsing.

"It had been burning a couple hours, at least," Smith said.

Genola firefighters were aided by crews from neighboring Santaquin and Goshen. Icy conditions — temperatures were at minus 8, Smith said — made the going tough.

No injuries were reported.

Smith said damage totaled $170,000 — $140,000 for the home, which was a complete loss, and another $30,000 for the contents.

The home was located near 600 West and Highway 6.
