After Lehi made international headlines in Australia and England last week for a decision to change the name of Morning Glory Road because of a sexual innuendo, some cities in Utah sharing the same street name say they have no plans for changes.
Streets in Moab, Santa Clara and Riverton still bear the name of Morning Glory.
Riverton City Councilman Brent Johnson said he has never received any complaints from his constituents about the street in his city named Morning Glory Circle.
When he heard of the news in Lehi, Johnson said, "What is wrong with people? That is absolutely ridiculous."
Lehi's street name debacle began after the technology software company Xactware Solutions Inc. told the Lehi City Council in December the street name also a less commonly known slang for a male erection in the morning wouldn't "fit with their international corporate image."
Johnson called Lehi's name change "frivolous and a waste."
He said if cities everywhere started parsing words and found a sexual connotation in everything that the work of renaming streets would be endless.
"Where is it going to end? Are we going to [start naming streets with] street one, two, three, four, five?"
Santa Clara City Councilwoman Mary Jo Hafen said there are many words that are offensive now that didn't used to be, but none of her residents have made any complaints about a street named Morning Glory that goes past an elementary school.
"If the neighbors are concerned by it and if they wanted it changed, I would be open to it," she said. "I can't speak for the others, but in my situation I wouldn't bring [the slang term for Morning Glory] up."
In Grand County, there is a subdivision outside Moab's city limits with a road named Morning Glory Trail. A request for comment with the county's community development department wasn't returned.
Lehi said it has not received complaints about other street names. In the wake of last week's controversy, Traverse Mountain's After Glow Lane has been brought up by residents on a public comment board as another street with a sexual undertone.
