Salt Lake City has revved up its "Care to Clear the Air" program that offers residents tools and resources to help them stay informed about air-quality conditions and transportation options when air pollution builds up in the valley.

Salt Lakers can register to receive air-quality text-message alerts by visiting the campaign website at CareToClearTheAir.org.

The alerts are offered to inform residents about upcoming poor air quality days and to encourage them to plan ahead to drive less, according to the office of Mayor Ralph Becker.

Although temperatures are dropping, residents can still choose winter-friendly travel options, like riding UTA, van/carpooling and telecommuting.

"There is no better time for all of us to be considering alternatives to driving than in the midst of a winter inversion," Becker said. "Each of our individual efforts can, and does, make a positive impact on our air quality."

Additional resources include informational "Learn to Drive Less" videos, such as "How to load your bike on the bus" and "How to ride FrontRunner" on the Care to Clear the Air YouTube page at youtube.com/cleartheairutah.
