83-year-old man injured after his vehicle collides with TRAX train in Murray

An 83-year-old man was injured Wednesday afternoon in Murray after he allegedly drove around railroad crossing arms and collided with an oncoming TRAX train.

Utah Transit Authority spokesman Gerry Carpenter said the man was southbound about 1:30 p.m. on 300 West when he ignored a red left turn arrow, turned left onto 6100 South and drove around the railroad crossing arms.

His vehicle collided with a southbound Blue Line train, Carpenter said.

The man was transported to a hospital for treatment for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.

The incident caused delays on all rail lines while authorities investigated, but service was restored by 2 p.m.

Carpenter said police expected to issue the man a citation for failing to yield to the railroad crossing arms.

Wednesday's crash occurred in the same spot where a tow truck driver also attempted to drive around the gates in October 2011. That driver was also injured when he was struck by a train, Carpenter said.
