Snow College promotes Britt Maughan to football coach

Britt Maughan was named today as the new head football coach at Snow College, the school announced in a Wednesday news release.

Maughan replaces Tyler Hughes who stepped down on Monday to continue his education full time. Hughes will remain at Snow College through the spring semester, teaching classes and working with Maughan and the rest of the coaching staff to ensure a smooth transition.

"I am honored to become the head coach at Snow College," Maughan said in the release. "My wife and I love it here and we are very excited for the opportunity to continue to build upon the great tradition that has been established. I am sorry to see Coach Hughes go; he is a great friend and coach. I have enjoyed my time working with him and I know every coach and player will miss him."

Maughan has served the past two years as Snow's defensive coordinator. He was Snow's linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator from 2006 through 2008. He then spent two years at the University of Utah where he coached safeties in 2009 and linebackers in 2010.

In 2004 he was the running backs coach at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah, and the following year was the Scots' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He started his coaching career as the line coach at his alma mater, Weber High School in Pleasant View, Utah, in 2003.

This past season, under Maughan's direction the Snow College defense had six players named to the WSFL (Western States Football League) All Conference First Team: Ofa Hautau, Jake Miller and Thomas Bryson at defensive line; Nik Wolford at linebacker; Kapena Clark at defensive back; and Chris Van Orden as punter. Hautau was named WSFL Defensive Player of the Year, and his brother Siale Hautau, the fourth starting defensive lineman, has signed to play next year at Oregon State University. Ofa Hautau, Miller and Van Orden were named to this year's NJCAA All-America defensive teams, as well as three Badgers who were named to the All-America offensive teams.

This year's 11-1 Badgers were ranked No. 3 in the season final poll and led the nation in takeaways (40), sacks (67), defensive/special teams touchdowns (9) and safeties (8). In winning the inaugural Carrier Dome Bowl in Syracuse, N.Y., over ASA College of Brooklyn by a score of 47-21, Snow started drives in ASA territory seven times, while ASA never started better than at their own 34-yard line.
