In "Natural beauty" (Forum, Jan. 3), Maria Madrid from Belgium marvels at the natural beauty of Utah and stresses how important the designation of 1.4 million acres around Canyonlands as a national monument will be to her and her friends.

News flash: You will still be able to hike these lands, even if not designated!

However, if they are designated, I and other mobility impaired persons who are actually citizens of this country most likely won't be able to share your joy.

Why is it so important to have exclusive use of these lands? The public lands of America belong to every citizen, not just to those who worship at the altar of Gaia.

If you are not willing to share our land with the natives, perhaps you should stay home.
