Sports briefs: Lance Armstrong 'ready to speak candidly' with Oprah Winfrey

COLLGE FOOTBALL • The Utah Utes added a cornerback to their 2013 recruiting class Sunday. Hipolito Corporan, a 6-foot-1, 172-pound corner from Westside High School in Houston, has committed to Utah.

Corporan originally committed to Virginia, but switched to Utah due to some coaching changes at Virginia. He said he is solid with the Utes.

"I'm done with the recruiting process," he said. "I'm going to Utah."

Corporan visited Utah this weekend and said he got along well with the coaching staff. The deciding factor for him was the possibility he could play right away at cornerback.

"I'm aggressive and I am a cover corner, but I like to come down and tackle too," he said.

Armstrong ready to face Oprah

cycling • Lance Armstrong said he was "ready to speak candidly" as he prepared to discuss doping allegations against him in his interview Monday with Oprah Winfrey. Armstrong was out for a morning run Sunday in Austin, Texas, when he spoke briefly with The Associated Press. The man who once ruled cycling would not divulge what he will tell say in Monday's interview from his home that is to be broadcast Thursday on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

"I'm calm, I'm at ease and ready to speak candidly," he said from the side of the road. "I hope we'll talk for a couple of hours."

The prospect of such a talk has brought international TV crews to Armstrong's hilly neighborhood. A person with knowledge of the situation has told the AP that Armstrong will give a limited confession and apologize. That would be his first public response to a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report accusing him of using banned drugs to win the Tour de France.

Manchester teams notch victories

soccer • Manchester United's seven-point lead over Manchester City stayed intact Sunday after the title-chasing rivals defeated two former powers in the Premier League. United scraped its way to a 2-1 victory at home in London against Liverpool. City won 2-0 at Arsenal after playing against 10 men for most of the match. Robin van Persie sent United on the way to victory with his league-high 17th goal of the season. City enjoyed its first league win at Arsenal in 38 years.

Ethiopians sweep Houston Marathon

Running • Bazu Worku and Merima Mohammed gave Ethiopia a sweep of the men's and women's divisions of the Houston Marathon. Worku claimed his first marathon title, finishing in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 17 seconds — more than 2 minutes ahead of countryman Teferi Balcha (2:12.50). On day of rain with temperatures in the 40s, Andrew Carlson of Minneapolis was the top American, finishing seventh in 2:17:16.

Mohammed was timed in 2:23:37. Buzunesh Deba was the women's runner-up in 2:24:36.
