Director Kim Longinotto's documentary "Salma," debuting at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, tells a harrowing story of a woman's subjugation and eventual liberation.
Salma grew up in southern India, and at age 13 was locked away by her parents. At 19, as the trailer describes, she was tricked into marriage – and her husband isolated her for many more years. She wrote poetry while confined, and eventually those poems made it to the outside world, changing Salma's life.
"Salma" screens in the World Cinema Documentary competition of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
