An early Wednesday morning fire heavily damaged a Clinton house, leaving a family of four temporarily without a home.
The 12:47 a.m. blaze at 2841 W. 1010 West caused an estimated $150,000 to $200,000 in damage, most of that to a travel trailer and the pickup truck to which it was hitched. Clinton Deputy Fire Chief Justin Benavides said the flames also burned into the home's kitchen and attic before crews doused the fire.
Neighbors reported hearing what sounded like bullets going off inside the trailer during the blaze, but no one was hurt.
Also, firefighters may have been delayed as they searched for the nearest fire hydrant, only to find it buried under recent snowfall. Residents of areas of heavy snowfall are being urged statewide to keep hydrants clear.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation, but it appeared coals from a wood-burning stove deposited either inside or next to a garbage can may have been to blame, Benavides said.
