Real Salt Lake center back Nat Borchers won't be ready for the start of preseason training after undergoing surgery to deal with a lingering quad injury.

A torn tendon in Borchers' right quad — a persistent problem for him since late 2011 — was not responding to rehabilitation last month, so the veteran defender opted for surgery, RSL officials said Wednesday. Borchers underwent surgery the first week of January. No timeline has been established for his return. If he misses extensive time, it would mean another test for a back line that will already be without Jamison Olave this year.

Goalkeeper Nick Rimando, however, will be ready for the start of camp last week after having surgery in December to remove in a bone spur in his ankle.
