The public is invited to an event next week at the Capitol to raise radon awareness.

State environmental quality officials and Cancer Survivors Against Radon (CanSAR) are hosting "Capital Steps to Radon Action" on the Capitol's steps at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Radon gas, a class A carcinogen, can seep from the ground into buildings. Approximately 21,000 individuals die each year in this country from radon-induced lung cancer.

Wednesday's event will provide information on radon testing and mitigation; a limited amount of free radon test kits will be available.
