Utah Basketball - Unexpected contributions lead to competition

Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak was quick to point out that the starting lineup would remain the same on Thursday night when the Utes face California at the Huntsman Center.

Krystkowiak was also quick to point out there were three days of practice leading to Thursday night.

This is what Krystkowiak's wanted for two years. What he didn't receive last season. What he didn't have for a big chunk of this season.

Competition.

Brandon Taylor and Justin Seymour are making it difficult for Krystkowiak to keep off the floor. Obviously, the two freshmen guards have veterans ahead of them in Glen Dean and Jarred DuBois.

So, even if the two incumbents start on Thursday, they will have a shorter leash than they have all season.

"That's what basketball is about," Jason Washburn said. "Nobody should take it personally. Guys have to earn their spots every day in practice."

Taylor and Seymour have given this season a jolt of energy, a shot in the arm when the year was thought to be spiraling out of control.

And much like Krystkowiak did earlier in the season by handing the starting role to Dallin Bachynski when Washburn wasn't playing well, the Utes coach is not afraid to put a hot hand on the floor when warranted.
