Man charged with posing as cop, storming home for drugs

A Salt Lake City man was charged with a felony after he and two others allegedly dressed up as police officers, stormed a home in West Jordan and assaulted two men while looking for drugs.

An affidavit filed Tuesday in 3rd District Court alleges that the 35-year-old man took part in the 2009 home invasion when he, a 38-year-old man and a juvenile stormed into a house dressed in police uniforms and masks while carrying guns, telling the men to get on the ground.

The intruders tied the men up with zip ties and demanded to know where drugs and money were located in the house. The men also allegedly kicked the men and assaulted them with the butts of their rifles.

When police arrived, all but one of the three had fled. The 38-year-old was stuck in the basement, so he hit himself in the face, tied himself up and tried to make it look like he was one of the victims in the burglary. The man was later arrested, charged and convicted on one count of aggravated burglary.

Sometime after his arrest, the 38-year-old identified the 35-year-old Salt Lake City man and an unidentified juvenile as the two others in the burglary.

Prosecutors say they matched DNA at the burglary to that of the 35-year-old.
