More than 12 hours after a crash in Tooele County left one man dead, investigators are still trying to figure out what happened.

The Utah Highway Patrol reports that Randy Bowen, 39, of Tooele, was traveling east on State Road 112 around 6 p.m. in a white Chevrolet pickup truck when he crossed into the westbound lanes.

Bowen's truck collided with a green Dodge Caravan being driving by Howard Mahler, 73, of Tooele. The truck then spun out of control and hit a black GMC pickup truck with a male driver and female passenger.

Mahler was critically injured and later died at a Tooele hospital.

Bowen also suffered injuries and was in critical condition early Friday morning. The occupants of the black pickup truck did not suffer injuries.

Friday morning, UHP Lt. Corey Nye said the cause of the accident was still unknown, but weather has been ruled out as a contributing factor.

He said Bowen could have been fatigued, impaired or influenced by a medical condition, among other things. Nye also said that authorities have identified a witness they planned to interview Friday.

The crash left SR 112 closed for about three hours on Thursday.
