State colleges: Utah Valley beats Northern Colorado 39-0 in wrestling

Orem • Utah Valley University swept through all 10 weight classes in recording a 39-0 win over Northern Colorado in a Western Wrestling Conference dual on Saturday night. It marks the first time in program history the Wolverines have shutout an opponent in a dual.

"I've said before that I really like this team and I really like their work ethic — especially this week heading into this match," UVU coach Greg Williams said.

Avery Garner, Josh Wilson, Abner Cook and Jade Rauser all picked up bonus points for the Wolverines, with Cook and Rauser both winning by fall.

The Wolverines will host a Pac-12 school for the second time this season Friday when Stanford visits Orem. The dual starts at 7 p.m.

Gymnastics

Boise State 194.700, BYU 194.425 • In Provo, Makenzie Johnson and Eliane Kulczyk each scored a 9.825 on the vault, but the Broncos responded with five gymnasts scoring 9.7 or better in a narrow loss for the Cougars. BYU's Raquel Willman finished second in the all-around with a 38.575.

Track and field

BYU • Cade Lindahl won the 400 meters in 48.22 seconds, edging UCLA's Pete Lauderdale by .01 seconds in the invite section of the University of Washington Invitational. On the women's side, Natalie Shields won the 3,000 meters in 9 minutes, 47.44 seconds, just ahead of teammate Andrea Harrison (9:48.74). Kelsey Brown won the 800 (2:04.94) by nearly five seconds.

Utah • Amanda Mergaert won the 800 meters in 2:08.18 and Candus Ford won the shot put with a heave of 48 feet at the final day of the New Mexico Invitational.

Utah State • Jodi Williams cleared 5 feet, 5 inches to win the high jump at the Jacksons Invitational in Nampa, Idaho. On the men's side, Nic Bowens (6.86) and Silas Pimentel (6.90) finished first and second in the 60, and Tyler Killpack won the 800 (1:52.17) by just over a tenth of a second.

Weber State • Mike Hardy ran 4:10.80 to win the mile at the Jacksons Invitational.

Southern Utah • Arnold Carrillo won the 400 in 48.57 at the University of Washington Invitational.

Women's tennis

BYU • The Cougars beat Utah State 6-1 in Provo to improve to 2-0. Desiree Tran won at No. 2 singles and paired with Meghan Sheehan-Dizon to win at No. 1 doubles. Utah State's McKenzie Davis won at No. 1 singles, beating Morgan Anderson 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

Men's tennis

BYU • The Cougars (5-0) remained unbeaten beating South Florida 4-0 at ITA Kickoff Weekend in Los Angeles. BYU plays No. 3 UCLA at 11 a.m. Monday.

Utah • The Utes (3-0) earned their first shutout of the season, beating Montana 7-0 at home.

Utah State • The Aggies (0-2) match against Northern Arizona was canceled Saturday because of weather. The game will be played at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Softball

SLCC • Games scheduled Saturday and Sunday in Henderson, Nev., for No. 1-ranked Salt Lake Community College were canceled because of weather. The Bruins (0-2) began the season Friday with two loses.

Baseball

SLCC • No. 17-ranked Salt Lake Community College (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening loss Friday, beating Cochise College (Ariz.) 9-3 at the Coyote Border Battle in Henderson, Nev.
