Sportsbriefs: Demetrious Johnson retains UFC flyweight title

MMA • Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his flyweight title at UFC Chicago, unanimously outpointing John Dodson in front of a capacity crowd Saturday night at the United Center.

Johnson (17-2-1) started taking control late in fourth round, landing a series of knees to Dodson's head and a series of punches as Dodson (15-6) tired. It continued in the fifth and final round, as Dodson couldn't defend repeated knees to his head.

In what may have been the most anticipated fight of the night, Glover Teixeira topped Rampage Jackson in an unanimous decision in a light heavyweight bout. Jackson, the 34-year-old former light heavyweight champion was taken down in all three rounds, but Teixeira (20-2) couldn't take advantage. Jackson (32-11) got back to his feet every time.

England's Luton pulls off upset

soccer • Fifth-tier Luton became the first nonleague club in 24 years to beat top-level opponent in the FA Cup, defeating Norwich 1-0 in the fourth round Saturday in London on Scott Rendell's goal in the 80th minute. Luton, which played in the second tier as recently as 2006-07, is 85 places below Norwich in the English soccer pyramid. There had not been such an upset in the FA Cup since Sutton beat Coventry 2-1 in the third round in 1989. Not since 1949 had a nonleague team managed to overcome a top-level team after the third round.

Luton, an FA Cup semifinalist in 1994, won the League Cup in 1988 and was in the top division until 1992.

Teddy's Promise wins Stakes

horse racing • Teddy's Promise won the $250,000 Santa Monica Stakes by three lengths at Santa Anita, a year after finishing fifth in the Grade 2 race. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Teddy's Promise ran 7 furlongs in 1:22.64 on a dirt surface listed as wet-fast after earlier rain. The 5-year-old mare paid $5, $3.40 and $2.40 as the 3-2 favorite in the field of seven. Sugarinthemorning returned $7 and $4.20, while Kindle was another half-length back in third and paid $3.40 to show. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's duo of Distracting and Pink Lollipops finished fourth and seventh, respectively.
