Significant structural damage was reported after a Friday afternoon house fire in Magna that took about 60 firefighters to extinguish.

Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Mecham said a 911 caller reported smoke coming out of a home located on the 7200 block of West Jefferson Street (3695 South) at about 3:23 p.m.

When crews arrived they found thick black smoke coming out of all sides of the house, Mecham said. Firefighters originally fought the blaze from inside but moved to attack it from outside the house after they discovered it had significant structural damagee.

"The occupants are definitely not going to get back inside of [the house] tonight," Mecham said. The extent of the damage and the fire's cause were not immediately known Friday afternoon. The two-alarm fire called out a total of 22 fire units, Mecham said.
