Utes hold on to win at USC

Iwalani Rodrigues scored 23 points to lead the Utah women's basketball team to a 63-60 victory over USC in women's college basketball action Friday night in Los Angeles.

The Utes (11-9, 2-7 Pac-12) trailed by two at halftime but led by as much as 10 in the second half. Utah shot 57 percent from the field in the second half, made seven free throws in the final minute, and withstood a late rally from the Trojans (8-12, 5-4), who missed a desperation 3-pointer that would have tied the game as time expired.

Men's volleyball

Long Beach State def. BYU 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 16-25, 15-10 • The top-ranked Cougars lost their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season, falling to the No. 7 49ers in Provo. Taylor Sander led BYU (5-2 overall, 4-1 MPSF) with 21 kills and 6 blocks.

Gymnastics

Southern Utah 195.425, Utah State 194.2 • The host Thunderbirds outscored the Aggies in all four events en route to a Western Athletic Conference victory.

Boise State 196.325, BYU 195.125 • The Cougars posted a season-best team score but lost to the Broncos in Boise.

Skiing

Utah leads • Miles Havlick earned his eighth career victory by winning the 5K classical race to help the Utes take the first-day lead at the New Mexico Invitational at Red River, N.M.
