Fog warnings: Semi crashes, but otherwise commuters taking care

A foggy Thursday morning commute slowed traffic on northern Utah's interstates, but motorists generally reacted well to decreased visibility by exercising caution.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said fog may have been a factor in a semi-trailer rig tipping over on southbound Interstate 15 near Honeyville just before 6 a.m. Drivers were diverted around the scene onto State Road 30 initially, but by 7:30 a.m. traffic — with delays of about 15 minutes — had resumed through one I-15 lane.

The semi's driver appeared to have partially slipped of the road surface causing the rear two of his three trailers to tip over. He was not hurt and none of the trailers carried hazardous materials, Johnson said.

"It was foggy there at the time of the accident, but the cause is still being investigated," Johnson said. "Otherwise, everything's been pretty good" with commuters adjusting to the lower visibility by slowing down.

The Utah Department of Transportation had issued warnings for patchy fog on roads throughout the northern Utah stretch of the Wasatch Front. Box Elder, Weber, Davis, Salt Lake and Tooele counties particularly were targeted.
