State colleges: Southern Utah beats Idaho State in overtime

Pocatello, Idaho • Damon Heuir, the leading scorer in the Big Sky Conference, scored six of his 17 points in overtime to lead Southern Utah to an 81-79 win over Idaho State on Thursday night.

Jackson Stevenett led the Thunderbirds (10-12, 8-5 Big Sky) with 23 points, but only had two points in overtime. Heuir had a drive for the win in regulation play, but lost the ball beneath the basket with 4.2 seconds left. Tomas Sanchez, who led Idaho State (4-18, 3-10) with 19 points, missed a 3-pointer from near the top of the key at the buzzer.

The game was close throughout the night with 13 ties and 21 lead changes. A.J. Hess scored 12 points for Southern Utah and Cal Hanks had 10. Andre Hatchett had 18 points for Idaho State while Melvin Morgan added 15.

Southern Utah had a 42-28 rebounding advantage with Stevenett and Jayson Cheesman each collecting eight. Southern Utah was 25-of-28 from the free-throw line while Idaho State was 33-of-40.

The win was Southern Utah's fifth straight while Idaho State has lost six straight. Former Southern Utah coach Bill Evans, now at Idaho State, is 1-1 against his former team.

Men's volleyball

BYU 3, UC Santa Barbara 2 • Taylor Sander led three BYU players in double-figure kills with a match-high 20 as the No. 1-ranked Cougars defeated No. 7 USCB in five sets at Smith Fieldhouse.

Freshman Ben Patch tallied 19 kills and eight digs, and Josue Rivera had 14 kills and nine digs for BYU (6-2), which won 21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-27, 15-9.

Women's basketball

Southern Utah 72, Weber State 54 • In Cedar City, Hailey Mandelko scored a game-high 18 points as the Thunderbirds (11-11, 5-7) snapped a three-game losing streak in Big Sky Conference action. Regina Okoye scored a team-high 12 points for Weber State (0-22, 0-13), which has lost 41 consecutive games dating to December 2011.

Skiing

Loveland, Colo. • Ana Kobal placed second in the women's slalom Thursday, helping Utah earn 75 points in the competition during the second day of the University of Utah Invitational at the Loveland Ski Area.

Utah is in third place with 392 points in the four-day event. Denver is in first place with 476 points, followed by Colorado (440). Nikolai Narvestad placed fourth in the men's slalom for Westminster, which is seventh out of nine teams with 100 points.

Softball

Colorado State 4, BYU 1 • In St. George, the Cougars left seven runners on base and had just four hits in their season-opening game. Megan Arnold was 2-for-3 and Carly Duckworth went 1-for-3 with a double and a run for the Cougars.

No. 5 Tennessee 18, Southern Utah 3 (5) • In St. George, Madison Shipman was 3-for-5 with five RBIs as the Vols bashed 22 hits during a five-inning game in both teams' season-opening game. Kadi Henderson hit a three-run homer in the fourth innings for the Thunderbirds.

College of Southern Nevada 11-6, Snow College 2-2 • The Badgers (3-4, 0-2) lost a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday, losing the first game 11-2 and the second game 6-2 in North Las Vegas.

SLCC 16-4, Colorado Northwestern CC 3-2 • In St. George, No. 1-ranked Salt Lake Community College won its seventh and eighth straight games Thursday, winning 16-2 and 4-2.
