State college basketball: Saint Mary's women beat BYU, 64-52

The Saint Mary's women's basketball team defeated BYU 64-52 on Saturday in Moraga, Calif., overcoming a game-high 18 points by the Cougars' Haley Steed.

The Gaels (16-6, 8-2 West Coast Conference) closed the game on a 19-7 run and took sole possession of second place behind Gonzaga.

Steed was 4-for-7 on 3-point attempts for BYU (16-6, 7-3), which led 30-28 at halftime.

Danielle Mauldin came off the bench to lead Saint Mary's with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Utah Valley 64, NJIT 47 • In Orem, Tina Doughty scored 16 points, and Sammie Jensen had 14 points and 17 rebounds as the Wolverines (10-13, 4-1 Great West) dominated NJIT (11-15, 3-2) to break a first-place tie.

Idaho State 60, Southern Utah 50 • In Cedar City, the Bengals held the host Thunderbirds to a season-low point total in the Big Sky Conference game. Kimie Hawkins led SUU (11-12, 6-8) with 13 points.

Men's basketball

Utah Valley 66, Texas-Pan American 49 • In Orem, Ben Aird and Jason Johnson scored 15 points each as Utah Valley defeated Texas-Pan American.

Holton Hunsaker added 12 points and Nick Thompson 11 for the Wolverines (11-13, 2-3 Great West). Aird had 12 rebounds, and Thompson collected 11 boards and eight assists.

Jesus Delgado scored 14 points and Justin Leathers 11 for the Broncs (12-13, 3-2), who shot 31.6 percent (18 of 57) from the floor and were outrebounded 36-28. Leading scorer Brandon Provost was limited to four points on 2 of 9 shooting.

SLCC 86, Snow College 81 • Skyler Halford scored 22 points, Gary Payton II scored 18 and Sai Tummala added 13 for the host Bruins.

Montana Western 76, Westminster 54 • In Dillon, Mont., the Griffins committed 22 turnovers and had their seven-game winning streak snapped.
