A Utah parole officer was hospitalized Monday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg during a training exercise.

The shooting occurred just after 3:30 p.m. at Utah's police academy, which is known as POST — Police Officer Standards and Training — 410 W. 9800 South. No one else was injured.

Utah Department of Corrections spokesman Steve Gehrke said the man has worked as an Adult Probation and Parole officer for several years. His name was not immediately released.

The officer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment in stable condition, Gehrke said.

Parole officers are required to take a firearms test twice each year, Gehrke said.
