Boy hurt, two cited in I-15 crashes near St. George

A boy remained in serious condition Tuesday, the day after being injured in one of two crashes partially blamed on a pickup truck that lost part of its load of insulation rolls on Interstate 15 near St. George.

Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said the 30-year-old male driver of the pickup truck was cited for spilling his load about 5:40 p.m. in the northbound lanes near milepost 10.

The first collision occurred when a motorist slowed after seeing the insulation in the road and was rear-ended by a second car, UHP said. A male child in the second car suffered serious injuries and was taken by medical helicopter to a Las Vegas hospital.

The female driver of the second car in that crash was cited for following too close, Johnson said.

The second crash quickly followed the first and also occurred when one car slowed to avoid the mess on the highway and was rear-ended by another car. No injuries resulted from that collision, UHP said.
