The University of Utah softball team captured two victories Sunday at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas, defeating Long Beach State 3-1 and UNLV 14-6 in five innings.
Marisa Mendenhall drove in all three of the Utes' runs in their victory over the 49ers, and Naomi Amu hit a grand slam for Utah (4-6) against UNLV.
Hawaii 3, Utah Valley 1 • The Wolverines (5-5) stayed close with the No. 20 Rainbow Wahine but lost their final game of the Easton Desert Classic. Amanda Robinson went 2-for-3 and drove in UVU's only run.
Drake 7, Southern Utah 2 • The Thunderbirds (2-8) concluded the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., with a 1-4 record after losing to the Bulldogs. Kelsey Bryant doubled and drove in a run for SUU.
Arizona 13, Utah State 1 (5 innings) • Rachael Hunsaker doubled in the Aggies' only run of the game as USU (0-10) concluded play at the Hillenbrand Invitational with a loss to the host Wildcats.
Baseball
Loyola Marymount 11, Utah 2 • The Utes couldn't recover from LMU's six-run fourth inning and five-run eighth and lost to the Lions in Los Angeles. A.J. Young went 2-for-3 and Kody Davis drove in a run for Utah (1-2).
Gonzaga 6, Utah Valley 4 • Trailing 5-0 in the eighth inning, the Wolverines (1-3) scored four runs to pull close, but after the Zags scored a run in the ninth inning, the last three UVU batters struck out to end the game at the Palm Springs (Calif.) Invitational.
Jordy Hart went 3-for-4 to lead Utah Valley.
