Residents of Utah County need to ask themselves what they were thinking when they re-elected state Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem. Her belief that the high school International Baccalaureate program is founded in socialism, and her misdirected belief that women seeking an abortion should answer pointless questions concerning a very private matter, are unacceptable to reasonable people.

A year ago, our son participated in the IB program. This led him into a respected private college and later into a nationally known MBA program. He is now an example of the benefit accrued from the IB program. The IB's expanded field of study and demands of intellectual pursuit resulted in his success in college. Skills learned in the IB program served him well.

No matter where you stand on abortion, one and all agree it is a heart-wrenching and difficult decision. It's a decision best left to the conscience of the individual. Pushing for answers to pointless questions during this trying experience is just plain wrong.

Dayton needs to stop listening to the Utah Eagle Forum and listen to common sense and reason. Neither of these proposed laws makes any logical or reasonable sense. They simply pursue a conservative and wrongheaded agenda.
