State colleges: BYU men's volleyball sweeps Pacific

Ben Patch registered 13 kills and a .417 attack percentage to lead the BYU men's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 sweep of Pacific on Friday night in Provo.

The second-ranked Cougars (10-3, 9-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) finished with a .265 attack percentage compared with .133 for the Tigers (5-7, 3-7).

BYU hosts No. 5 Stanford on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Baseball

Utah 11, UC Davis 8 • The Utes (2-2) scored five runs in the final two innings, including a two-run single from Tyler Relf in the ninth, to take the victory in Davis, Calif. Josh Chapman earned the victory, pitching two innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk and striking out two.

Southeastern Louisiana 4, BYU 1 • The Cougars (2-4) took a 1-0 lead on a Brock Whitney sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning, but the Lions turned an RBI infield single, a triple, a suicide squeeze and a run-scoring double into four runs and the victory in Baton Rouge, La.

Softball

Utah 7, Colorado State 3 • Taylor Austin went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, and Kelsi Hoopiiaina and Kate Dickman drove in two runs each to lead the Utes (5-6) at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

BYU 5, UNLV 3 • The Cougars scored four runs in the final two innings to rally past the Rebels at the Mary Nutter Classic. Alexandra Hudson Shamo went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead BYU (5-8).

Utah State • The Aggies (0-12) dropped two games in their first day of action at the Texas Invitational in Austin, losing to Lamar 5-2 and Tulsa 8-0 in five innings.

Weber State • The Wildcats (0-7) lost two games on the first day of the Amy S. Harrison Invitational in Riverside, Calif., falling 10-1 in five innings to Boise State and getting blanked by San Diego 2-0.

Men's golf

John Burns Intercollegiate • Zac Blair shot a final-round 73 to finish in fourth place individually and lead BYU to a third-place finish in Kahuku, Hawaii. Blair finished at 1-under-par 215, and teammate Justin Kelley finished at 2-over to take seventh. Utah, led by Brandon Kida's 20th-place finish, were 14th in the team standings.

Southern Utah • The Thunderbirds are tied for 16th after the first round of the Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif. Sammy Cole led SUU with a opening-round 74.
