State colleges: BYU baseball team beats No. 2 LSU in Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge, La. • Brennor Anderson hit a three-run homer during a five-run BYU sixth inning, helping the Cougars snap a four-game losing streak in a 9-4 win over No. 2-ranked LSU Saturday night in college baseball.

"Against all odds we came out with a great mindset and played a near-perfect game," said Cougars coach Mike Littlewood, whose team played before a crowd of 6,742 at Alex Box Stadium — the sixth largest attendance in BYU history.

Anderson also hit a two-run single in the eighth inning, finishing 2-for-3 with five RBIs, and Kelton Caldwell was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for the Cougars (3-5), who lost to Southeastern Louisiana earlier Saturday.

On Thursday, LSU (5-1) beat BYU 6-5 on a bases-loaded, walk-off single.

Utah 7, UC Davis 3 • In Davis, Calif., TJ Bennett hit a two-run homer in the eighth; AJ Young and Cory Hunt each hit ninth-inning home runs; and Tanner Banks allowed two runs and six hits while striking out four in seven innings for his first career win for Utah (3-2).

Utah Valley 7, Portland 6 (10); Utah Valley 3, Portland 1 • Kade Andrus hit an RBI double in the 10th inning in Game 1, while Adam Gunn allowed five hits and one run while striking out four in six innings during Game 2 for the Wolverines (3-3).

Men's volleyball

BYU 3, Stanford 2 • Ben Patch smashed a game-high 26 kills and Taylor Sander added 25 as the No. 2 Cougars rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat the No. 5 Cardinal 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 15-13 at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo. Ryan Boyce had 57 assists and Josue Rivera tallied 12 kills for BYU (11-3, 10-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), which has won three straight matches.

Softball

Utah 7, Long Island Brooklyn 0; Utah 5, Nevada 2 • The Utes extended their winning streak to five games, beating LIU Brooklyn in Game 1 and Nevada in Game 2 during the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

In Game 1, Kelsi Hoopiiaina had a triple and home run, and Naomi Amu allowed five hits and struck out two in 51⁄3 innings for the Utes.

In Game 2, Utah (7-6) was held to one hit in six innings before exploding in the seventh for five runs.

Northwestern 4, BYU 1; UC Santa Barbara 12, BYU 10 • The Cougars (5-10) lost for the fifth time in six games, falling twice Saturday at the Mary Nutter Classic.

Texas 13, Utah State 2 (5); Tulsa 3, Utah State 0 • The Aggies remain winless on the season, losing twice at the Texas Invitational in Austin.

In Game 1, Jolene Koons and Sarah Chow each had a hit and a run for Utah State, who lost in five innings to the No. 6-ranked Longhorns (14-1).

In Game 2, Mandy Harmon allowed one run and five hits while striking out three for the Aggies (0-14). Lacey Middlebrooks allowed just two hits while striking out 10 for Tulsa.

UC Riverside 4, Weber State 3 • Janel Cunningham went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, but the Wildcats (0-8) couldn't maintain their early during the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, Calif.

Gymnastics

BYU 195.800, Southern Utah 194.075 • In Provo, Raquel Willman won the all-around with a score of 39.200 and Eliane Kulczyk scored a 9.825 on vault as the Cougars earned a season-high score.

Utah State • Sarah Landes finished second in the all-around with a score of 39.075 for the Aggies, who finished last in a four-team meet at the University of Denver.

Denver won with a score of 195.800, followed by Boise State (194.525), Rutgers (193.925) and Utah State (192.150).

Men's tennis

Utah State 5, Montana State-Billings 0 • Sven Poslusny won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and also teamed with Matt Sweet to win 9-7 at No. 1 doubles as the Aggies won in Bozeman, Mont. The teams did not play the final two singles matches because of bad weather.

Women's tennis

Utah 5, Boise State 2 • Paige Miles won in straight sets at No. 6 singles to secure the Utes' (3-2) win during their home opener.

BYU 5, Iowa State 2 • The Cougars (5-1) earned their first ever victory over the Cyclones, bouncing back after losing their first match of the season Friday to UNLV in Las Vegas.

Indoor track and field

BYU • Victor Weirich won the men's pole vault at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships in Seattle, clearing 17 feet, 93/4 inches. David Graham was third in the 800 meters (1 minute, 50.62 seconds). On the women's side, Kelsey Brown was third in the 800, finishing in 2:07.11.

Arizona State won the men's meet with 125.5 points. BYU placed sixth with 46 points. Oregon won the women's meet with 112 points. BYU placed ninth with 24 points and Utah was 10th with 21.5 points.

Utah • Amanda Mergaert was third in the 800 at the MPSF championships, finishing in 2:06.34. Klaudia Rokossa was third in the pole vault, clearing 12-11.

Utah State • Nic Bowens set school records in the 60 (6.70) and 200 (21.17) to place second and third, respectively, leading the Aggies to a third-place finish at the Western Athletic Conference championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Briton Page won the 800 in 1:50.67 and teammate Tyler Killpack was second in 1:51.69.

Texas-San Antonio won the men's meet with 159 points. Utah State had 126 points. Texas State won the women's meet with 122 points. Utah State finished seventh with 51 points.

Weber State • Matt White won the 400 (47.57) and finished second in the 200 (21.69), leading the men's team to a fourth-place finish at the Big Sky Conference championships in Bozeman, Mont. Cylor Morgan won the long jump with a mark of 24-93/4 and Synjohn Lilly was third in the 60 in 6.41 seconds.

On the women's side, Sarah Callister won the 5,000 in 17:06.38 and Taylor Thornley was second in 17:15.56. Callister also placed second in the 3,000 (9:43). Katy Hufford was second in the long jump (19 11/2) and Ashley Kealamakia finished third in the 800 (2:12.21). Jamie Stokes finished second (4:52.61) and Laken Hintze was third (4:57.65) in the mile.

Northern Arizona won the men's meet with 143.5 points. Weber State had 73.5 points and Southern Utah had 63 points. Sacramento State won the women's meet with 107 points. Weber State finished fifth with 70 points and Southern Utah was seventh with 58 points.

Southern Utah • Preston Myers won the 200 (21.60) and finished second in the 60 (6.40) — behind teammate Shaun Murray (6.36) — at the Big Sky Conference championships.

Kodai Kusano was third in the 55 hurdles (7.60) and Alex Anderson was second in the triple jump (48-0).

On the women's side, Kayla Kovar won the shot put with a mark of 53-61/4 and Shaye Maurer was second in the 55 hurdles (7.85).
