Gov. Gary Herbert has submitted the names of 24 people to serve on three of the state's environmental policy boards. The nominations await Senate confirmation.
Most would be returning from past service on the boards, which were disbanded over the past year under SB11 by Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem. Under their new formats, the boards each have nine members, with Department of Environmental Quality Director Amanda Smith holding a position on each board.
On the Air Quality Board, the new members would be Karma M. Thomson, vice president of the Tesoro Salt Lake City refinery, and Tammie G. Lucero, executive director of the Uintah County Economic Development office.
Returning members are: Kerry Kelly, H. Craig Petersen, Stephen Sands, Michael Smith, Kathy Van Dame and Robert Paine.
Pending Senate approval, new members of the Solid and Hazardous Waste Control Board will be Marc W. Franc of Waste Management Inc., Shane B. Whitney of the Clean Harbors Grassy Mountain site in Tooele County and Brigham Young University environmental health professor Eugene C. Cole.
Returning members would be Brett Mickelson, Dwayne J. Woolley, Jeff Coombs, Dennis Riding and Kevin Murray.
The Water Quality Board would lose its two leaders, and half of its members would be new, including Sandy city public utilities Director Shane Pace. Other new members would be Gregg Galecki, an engineer with Arch Coal; Jennifer Grant, a water engineer with Kennecott Utah Copper; and Hugo E. Rodier, a Draper-based family doctor and radio show host.
