State colleges: Minnesota beats Utah in baseball, 4-1

The University of Utah baseball team managed just three hits in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota on Saturday at the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis.

Dallas Carroll was 2-for-3 to lead Utah (5-4) at the plate.

Trailing 4-0, Utah scored its only run in the sixth inning when Braden Anderson hit a single before scoring on a Minnesota error.

Utah starter Tanner Banks (1-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits over 61/3 innings.

Ben Meyer (1-2) pitched a three-hitter for the Golden Gophers (6-4).

BYU 14, Creighton 5 • Jaycob Brugman hit a grand slam in the fifth inning, and BYU defeated Creighton at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George. The Cougars (7-6) totalled 20 hits, and the win gave them a 2-1 victory in the series that was moved south from Provo due to unplayable conditions on BYU's home field. BYU's Adam Law hit a three-run homer, extending his hitting streak to six games.

SLCC 4-6, Western Nevada 0-3 • In Carson City, Nev., Brady Corless threw a two-hit shutout in the first game, and Bryan Heward had a triple and two RBIs and scored twice in the second game of the Bruins' doubleheader sweep.

Softball

BYU 6, New Mexico 1; Long Beach State 12, BYU 3 • In San Diego,BYU's J.C. Clayton, Marissa Bravo and Carly Duckworth each had two hits in the win over New Mexico. The Cougars committed four errors and gave up three home runs in the loss to Long Beach State.

Nevada 6, Southern Utah 5; San Jose State 1, Southern Utah 0 • In Stockton, Calif., Kadi Henderson hit a grand slam to put the Thunderbirds up 4-2 in the third inning against Nevada, but the Wolf Pack rallied for the win at the Libby Matson Tournament. Against San Jose State, SUU starter Danielle Axe took the loss despite giving up just one run on six hits in a complete-game effort.

CSU Northridge 8, Weber State 0; New Mexico State 4, Weber State 0 • In Las Vegas, the Wildcats had just four hits combined in their two losses at the Eller Media Stadium Classic. Second baseman Brooke Ford had a hit in each game for winless Weber State (0-13).

SLCC 0-8, College of Southern Nevada 3-0 • In Henderson, Nev., Salt Lake's Maddy Woodard went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBIs to lead the Bruins to the win in Game 2. SLCC stranded 11 baserunners in the Game 1 loss.

Track and field

The Utah Valley women's team had a pair of first-place finishes at the UNLV Track Classic in Las Vegas, with McKell Camp-Nielson winning the javelin (46.98 meters) and Mary Pincock winning the shot put (14.61 meters).

Men's volleyball

BYU 3, UC San Diego 0 • In La Jolla, Calif., Taylor Sander had 14 kills as the No. 2-ranked Cougars won 25-20, 27-25, 25-15.
