State college basketball: BYU women defeat Portland

The BYU women's basketball team wrapped up its regular season Saturday with a 73-63 victory over host Portland.

Kim Parker Beeston led the Cougars (20-10, 11-5 West Coast Conference) with 17 points, going 6-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

Jennifer Hamson scored 14 points with nine rebounds, while Stephanie Vermunt Seaborn and Keilani Unga added 12 points apiece.

The Cougars will begin play Friday in the WCC tournament in Las Vegas. BYU's opponent will be the winner of a second-round matchup Thursday.

Utah State 81, Texas-Arlington 57 • In Logan, Devyn Christensen scored 24 points, and Jenna Johnson had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Aggies (16-11, 13-3 WAC). The Aggies won for the 10th time in their last 11 games.

Utah Valley 59, Houston Baptist 46 • In Orem, Sammie Jensen tallied 32 points and 19 rebounds as the Wolverines (14-14, 7-1 Great West) clinched their first regular-season conference title. Kaycee Mansfield had 15 points and 11 rebounds for UVU.

Northern Arizona 65, Weber State 49 • In Ogden, Desiree Ramos led Weber State with 14 points, but the Wildcats (0-27) lost their home finale to remain winless on the season.

Men's basketball

Utah Valley 76, Chicago State 69 • In Orem, Jason Johnson scored 24 points, Ben Aird had 23 and UVU (14-16, 3-5) won its final Great West Conference regular-season game. Holton Hunsaker had 15 points for UVU, which will join the Western Athletic Conference next season.
