One of two pedestrians struck when a rear-ended car jumped onto a St. George sidewalk has died, police confirmed.

St. George police Officer Derek Lewis said the accident occurred at 9:09 a.m. Monday near Sunbrook Drive and Dixie Drive. David Henson, 56, was flown to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical condition but later died.

His wife, Leslee Henson, also 56, was taken to the same hospital by ground ambulance and was later transferred to a Salt Lake City hospital where she remained in serious condition Tuesday.

The accident occurred when the driver of a southbound Toyota Celica rear-ended a Subaru, causing that vehicle to go off the right side of Dixie Drive and strike the couple.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

No citations were issued, but investigators were looking into whether the Toyota's driver may have been distracted at the time of a crash, possibly by a cellphone.

Lewis said the case will be screened by the Washington County Attorney's Office for possible criminal charges after the investigation is complete.

The police are asking anyone who saw the accident or stopped to help to call Detective Sgt. Heidi Palmer at 435-627-4951.
