Re "Expand Medicaid: Step is both logical and humane" (Our View, March 5):
Like all good Republican governors, Rick Scott of Florida hates the Affordable Care Act and its provision to expand health care to the very poor. But two events happened recently that may have changed his mind.
The first was the election in which his party's opposition to the ACA, a major pillar of the Republican platform, was soundly rejected by the public.
The second was more personal. Scott lost his mother, and soon after he declared that in "good conscience" he could not deny health care to the neediest in his state and would accept the expansion of Medicaid.
Perhaps it's time for Gov. Gary Herbert to develop a conscience as well and expand Medicaid to those in his state who would otherwise be left behind.
