Salt Lake police: Man jailed in alleged assault of girlfriend, robbery of child

A 19-year-old Salt Lake City man was jailed after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, robbing a child at knife point and then breaking a police squad car window — with his head.

The man remained in Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $3,480 bail on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated robbery,third-degree felony damaging of property while incarcerated and misdemeanor counts of fleeing police, possession of alcohol and tobacco by a minor and driving without a valid license.

Salt Lake City police Det. Dennis McGowan said the suspect allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at a residence near 1200 N. Brigadier Circle about 8 a.m. Tuesday, then ran from the scene. A short time later, he purportedly robbed a 12-year-old boy of a gold necklace while holding a knife to his throat.

The man first tried to run away after being handcuffed, and when re-apprehended and put into the back seat of a police cruiser began banging his head against a window, breaking it.

He was treated for a minor cut to the head at jail, where he awaited a court appearance.
