It will be BYU vs. San Diego, again, in WCC quarters tonight

For the second-straight year in the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament, BYU will face San Diego in a quarterfinal game. The Toreros advanced to the quarters with a two-point win over Pepperdine late Thursday night. Tipoff is at 9:30 p.m. MST and the game will be televised by ESPNU. After UDS advanced, BYU assistant coach Tim LaComb met with reporters and said the Cougars won't lack for motivation in the game, and not just because their slim NCAA Tournament hopes are on the line. San Diego knocked off BYU 74-68 in San Diego back on Feb. 7. The Cougars were 11 for 22 from the free-throw line, committed 15 turnovers (several under USD's basket) and shot just 41.9 percent. "We didn't play well," LaComb acknowledged. Shortly after USD's win, coach Bill Grier and the Toreros were already talking about the rubber match with BYU. The Cougars drilled USD 74-57 back on Jan. Jan. 19. "They have one of the better zone defenses out there," Grier said of the Cougars. "Dave [Rose] has a lot of faith in it and they are good at it." When he met with reporters on Wednesday in Provo, BYU's Tyler Haws looked like he had lost a little weight. He said he was ill over the weekend, but starting to feel better. Thursday night, LaComb said Haws was fine and fully recovered. "He's good. He will be ready," LaComb said. Haws was 10 for 17 for 27 points in the loss at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Brandon Davies also played well when he wasn't in foul trouble, scoring 20 points on 8 for 14 shootng and grabbing 10 rebounds. However, he went 4 of 10 from the free-throw line, and the misfires proved costly. "Tyler Haws is as good a scorer as there is in our league," Grier said. "....They have a real good inside-out combination with Haws and Davies. They present a lot of problems."
