The Saint Mary's baseball team scored an unearned run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Utah 2-1 Saturday in Moraga, Calif.
Utah starter Tanner Banks (1-3) took a tough loss, after holding the Gaels to four hits over 81/3 innings. With one out in the ninth, Banks could not handle a sharp grounder by Saint Mary's DonAndre Clark, who would eventually score the winning run on Anthony Villa's sacrifice fly off reliever Dalton Carroll.
The Utes (6-6) had tied the game at 1-1 in the eighth inning when Connor Eppard drove in Kody Davis with a single. Davis went 2 for 4 to lead Utah at the plate.
With the win, the Gaels (5-9) evened the four-game series at 1-1.
UC Irvine 8, BYU 3 • In Provo, the Anteaters jumped to a 6-1 lead after three innings and went on to avoid a three-game series sweep. BYU starter Jeff Barker (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits over three innings.
Irvine ace Andrew Morales (5-0) held the Cougars to two runs on three hits over 61/3 innings to earn the win.
Leadoff hitter Jacob Hannemann went 2 for 4 for BYU (9-7), and Jaycob Brugman ripped a second-inning double and scored on Kelton Caldwell's sacrifice fly.
Softball
Arkansas 5, Utah Valley 0 • In Fayetteville, Ark., Utah Valley starter Josi Summers recorded seven strikeouts over 52/3 innings but took the loss after giving up solo home runs in the first and second innings. Kylee Brinkerhoff went 2 for 3 to lead UVU (5-8) at the plate.
Weber State • The Wildcats (2-17) split a pair of games at the Long Beach State Invitational, losing to North Dakota 3-0 before beating UNLV 7-3. Third baseman Desiree Mejia went 3 for 3 with two RBIs against the Rebels.
Southern Utah • Mikkel Griffin hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Thunderbirds to a 3-1 win over IUPUI at the Mizuno Invitational in Riverside, Calif. Earlier Saturday, SUU lost to Buffalo 6-3.
Track and field
In Fayetteville, Ark., Utah senior Amanda Mergaert placed fifth in the women's mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in a time of 4 minutes, 38.88 seconds. Colorado's Emma Coburn won in 4:29.91.
Men's tennis
BYU 4, San Diego 3 • In Provo, BYU's Patrick Kawka beat Thibaut Visy 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match as the Cougars improved to 12-4 overall and 2-0 in the West Coast Conference.
Men's volleyball
BYU 3, Cal Baptist 1 • In Provo, Taylor Sander had 17 kills to lead the Cougars to the 20-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-23 win. Sander had four service aces to set the BYU career record with 114.
