State colleges: Utah baseball team wins series against Saint Mary's

Tyler Yagi and Trey Nielsen each had two hits to lead the University of Utah baseball team to a 3-1 win over host Saint Mary's on Monday in Moraga, Calif.

With the victory, Utah (8-6) claimed a 3-1 win in the nonconference series.

Yagi went 2 for 3 with an RBI triple, and Niesen was 2 for 4 with a double and scored a run.

Utah starter Chase Rezac held Saint Mary's scoreless over 32⁄3 innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Dalton Carroll (1-1) entered the game in the fourth inning and escaped a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout, going on to earn his first collegiate win.

Men's golf

BYU • In Pauma Valley, Calif., Justin Keilly shot a 2-under 68 in the first round of the Triumph at Pauma Valley to take the individual lead and help put the Cougars in second place in the team standings.

San Francisco leads at 4 over par, followed by BYU at 8 over.

BYU's Zac Blair (2 over) was tied for sixth place, Devon Purser (3 over) was in eighth, and Joe Parkinson (5 over) was tied for 10th.

UVU • In Elk Grove, Calif., Sammy Cole shot a 1-under par 143 for a share of seventh place, helping put Utah Valley in fifth place after the first day of the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club.
