Local police and the Secret Service are hunting for a man suspected of passing counterfeit money who also apparently is a fan of Utah's biggest universities.

Orem Department of Public Safety Sgt. Craig Martinez said the man began passing fake $20 bills Jan. 23 at a Target store. At the time, the man was decked out in a BYU jacket and hat. Martinez said the suspect bought a TV with the fake money then returned it, effectively using the store to launder the money.

The man subsequently hit other stores in Riverton, Centerville and Tooele.

But in a twist, the supposed BYU fan crossed an entirely different line when he sported University of Utah gear during subsequent crimes.

"He's probably a Weber State fan," Martinez concluded, laughing.

Joking aside, Martinez said the Secret Service is now on the case.

Police say the white man is about 6 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. At one point he had a goatee, but in later surveillance footage appears to have shaved it off. Witnesses have observed him driving a 1990 Ford F-150.
