Utah State football: Linebacker Jake Doughty arrested

Utah State University linebacker Jake Doughty has been charged with buying beer for two underage females during a spring break trip in Southern Utah.

Doughty, 21, was boating at Sand Hollow State Park outside of St. George on Tuesday when rangers pulled up to the boat for an inspection and discovered two underage drinkers, according to a probable cause statement filed Wednesday in 5th District Court. The two females took breath tests that were positive for alcohol and said that Doughty and another person on the boat had purchased the alcohol for them, court documents state.

"Doughty stated that he had purchased the alcohol and supplied it to [the pair]," according to court documents. "Doughty stated that he was responsible for everything."

Doughty was booked in to the Washington County Jail and released on a $1,050 bond. He appeared in a St. George court on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to the class A misdemeanor count of furnishing alcohol to a minor. The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to a year in jail and a fine of $2,500.

USU officials declined to comment on the arrest.

Doughty entered a plea in abeyance in June of last year to class B misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, also in Washington County, a search of court records shows. His pleas were to be held in abeyance until June of this year, at which point the charges would be dismissed if he adhered to court orders and had no new violations of the law in that time.

Doughty, a Juan Diego High School graduate, played in all 13 games for the Aggies last season. The junior recorded a team-best 109 tackles.
