Crews knock-down blaze at West Jordan apartment complex

West Jordan firefighters put out a two-alarm blaze at an apartment complex in less than an hour Saturday evening.

The fire at the Broadmoor Village Apartments, 3375 S. 7800 West, was reported just after 9 p.m., according to Valley Emergency Communications dispatchers and was out by 9:55 p.m.

The fire started in a second floor apartment of Building 33, West Jordan Fire Chief Marc McElreath said. The male resident tried to extinguish the blaze, but it spread too quickly.

The man evacuated, along with his wife and daughter, but suffered minor burns to his arm trying to get the family pets out of the apartment, McElreath said. Neither the dog or the cat survived, he said.

Also before leaving the residence, the man, who's health requires him to use an oxygen tank, threw several tanks off the apartment balcony out of concern that they might explode, the chief said.

The fire destroyed the apartment and caused water and smoke damage to all of the seven other units in the building, McElreath said. All residents of the Building 33 were displaced and the Red Cross was providing shelter for those with no place to go, he said.

An official cause for the fire remains under investigation.

McElreath did not yet have a damage estimate for the blaze, but said it would "be expensive."

No one was hospitalized or seriously injured, although several people were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
