As a former Salt Lake City School Board member who represented both the Avenues and the west side, I fully support Michael Clara's controversial public stance to bring attention to the inequity facing west-side schools ("Salt Lake City board member blasted for calling teachers ineffective," Tribune March 14).
For a quarter of a century, if not more, low-income and minority students have faced challenges that our local, county and state governments have not yet begun to "effectively" address. Our teachers, our schools cannot combat the ravaging, destructive forces of poverty and subtle discrimination that continue to erode the "effectiveness" of teachers on the west side.
I fully agree with Clara's call for more community and teacher involvement in school principal selection and for more counselors and family-involvement specialists.
Instead of attacking Clara's attempt to improve things, Salt Lake teachers need to take advantage of Clara's making west-side schools an issue.
