Five candidates have been named as possible replacements for a retiring 3rd District juvenile court judge, who will vacate his position next month.

Judge Frederic Oddone will retire on April 16 after nearly two decades with the juvenile court. He was appointed in 1994 by Gov. Michael Leavitt, and has served Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele Counties ever since.

Court officials hope to have a replacement no later than the end of April.

The public is invited to comment on the nominees, who are all prominent area attorneys: Deputy Salt Lake County District Attorney Steven K. Beck; Assistant Utah Attorney General Susan Eisenman; Assistant Utah Attorney General Renee M. Jimenez; attorney Tracy S. Mills, with the Office of the Guardian ad Litem; and attorney Brent J. Newton, with the Office of the Guardian ad Litem.

A commission will review public comments on the nominees, as well as the candidates' backgrounds and history of professional conduct.

Once they have researched all five, the names will be sent to Gov. Gary Herbert, who will make an appointment in no more than 30 days. Herbert's appointee will then face the Utah Senate for confirmation.

The deadline for written comments is 5 p.m. on March 28.
