A former law enforcement official with the Carbon County Sheriff's Office was arrested and charged after he allegedly broke into an evidence room at the office and stole drugs.

Christopher Howard Basso, 37, a former sergeant, allegedly broke into the office while he was on administrative leave sometime in January.

Charging documents filed in 7th District Court on Monday allege that Basso stole methamphetamine.

Carbon County sheriff's Sgt. Ronnie Bogdin said Basso was terminated on Feb. 6. He said the Emery County Sheriff's Office is heading up an internal investigation into the matter. Bogdin said the office would not comment further on the incident, citing the internal probe.

Meanwhile, the Carbon County Attorney's Office on Monday charged Basso with third-degree felony burglary, two second-degree felony counts of possession or use of a controlled substance and one class A misdemeanor count of tampering with evidence.
