Police return fire, killing man in Salt Lake City

An interagency law enforcement team shot and killed a man who allegedly opened fire on officers attempting to arrest a fugitive in Salt Lake City on Tuesday afternoon.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Shawn Josephson said that members of the Joint Criminal Apprehension Team, which did not include Salt Lake City police, surrounded a home at 1149 S. Foulger St. shortly after 4 p.m. where they had tracked down the fugitive. JCAT is an interagency force operated by the U.S. Marshals Service that seeks wanted fugitives across the state.

A man, whose identity was not released Tuesday and who was not the fugitive, was standing on the house's front lawn when he shot at officers at least once, prompting multiple officers to return fire and strike the man, Josephson said. The man was rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police would not disclose how many officers shot at the man. It was also unknown Tuesday where and how many times the man was shot.

The fugitive, who was wanted on a parole violation, was later arrested when he and two others in the house surrendered to police after a brief standoff.

Salt Lake City police assisted in negotiating with the remaining people in the house. Josephson said he did not know whether anyone else in the home was armed. It was unknown what, if any, connection existed between the fatally wounded man and the others inside the home.
